It is no secret to anyone these days that health care costs are making all of us sick. The rate increases we have all experienced over the past several years have dramatically impacted our ability to compete in the marketplace and my greatest concern is that on the present course we are on, we are all looking at this problem getting worse, not better.
Over 50% of personal bankruptcies in the US are related to medical debt and 3/4ths of those who go bankrupt had health insurance at the time of their illness.
Over 70% of health care dollars go toward treating the effects of lifestyle related chronic conditions. Conditions such as: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, stress related conditions, chronic pain and adverse medication reactions.
Many employers are becoming crippled by the cost of health care. The annual rate of health care cost increases exceeds the average increase in profits for most companies in America. Starbucks spends more on health care than they do on coffee; GM spends more on health care than they do on steel.
This trend is affecting us all and unless we address this problem together as a team, we will all continue to suffer. That's not OK with me, and I hope it's not OK with you either.
